A randomized double-blind study compared the efficacy and safety of oral or intranasal ibuprofen in the management of sleep apnoea. One hundred patients were randomized to receive either ibuprofen 1 g twice daily for 8 weeks or placebo, and the patients were monitored for improvement within 3 months after treatment. The study was conducted in five centres: one in Sydney, the other in New South Wales, and all patients were monitored for an improvement in sleep (3 months). In total, 119 patients (70%) were monitored at the end of treatment, but only 24 (16%) were on a maintenance dose. There was no evidence of any adverse effects in the placebo group (p = 0.33). There were no differences in the sleep quality of the ibuprofen group (p = 0.26).
